What Am I Currently Paying?

Depending on the type of advisor you are working with in the financial industry (agent, broker dealer, investment rep) and the products you are invested in (annuities, mutual funds, individual stocks) your fees can be difficult to understand and vary widely.

We often hear that "my advisor only charges 1%" which can be true, but it's often not the whole story. While yes, in fact, your advisor may only receive 1%  from you directly (which you clearly see come out of your account on a monthly or quarterly basis), what you don't see are the fees you are paying on the underlying investments in your account, which go directly to the company that manages those funds.

If you are invested in mutual funds, odds are you paying an expense ratio that could range from .05% to 1.5%, depending on the type of fund. So in reality, you could be paying anywhere from 1.05% to 2.5% in total.

It's important to understand what you are paying, but it shouldn't be the only reason you choose an advisor. Instead focus on the value you are or will derive from the relationship.
